What to pack in your baby’s hospital bag!

If you are here, Welcome and Congratulations if you are a first time mum or a mum expecting another child pharaps some time has passed since the last time you gave birth and you just need a refresher. What ever the reaoson being, thank you for choosing to read my blog. I have just given birth to my second child in November 2024 after it being 4 years since giving birth to my first child in 2020. Let’s get to my recommendation on what things to pack in your baby’s hospital bag.

  • Don’t bother with socks (unless you have a special pair you would like the baby to wear while in the Hopsital that’s sentimental). Socks fall off too often and rather then risking your baby’s feet becoming cold, you can just use one piece suits that have the feet covers included. Bonds Wondersuits are the best!

  • One piece suits (as stated above) - depending on how big your baby bag is and what it can fit, think about packing 2-4 suits (depending on how long you stay in the hospital for, you should have a support person who will be able to bring fresh suits from home and take home the dirty ones if you need more then the amount you packed or have to stay longer then you expected. Same goes for any of the other items you pack)

  • Singlets - I would say 2-4

  • Beanie & Mittens (you don’t need to have a beanie on your babies head while you are inside the hospital. Mainly for travelling home.

  • Muslins / Swaddle Wraps - 2 should be fine

  • Nappies - a size 1 newborn pack.

  • Baby Wipes - try for some gentle wipes. I personally have been using water wipes my first child’s whole life, but keep in mind if its cold season that will be quite cold for baby unless you are at home with a wipes warmer or warm enough regulated heating in your home. Since my second daughter has been born, I have been using Bunjie, I have been enjoying their products they are a new brand. Also available at Woolworths on my knowledge.

  • A small hand sanitiser in a side pocket or hanging from the outside so anyone who touches the baby bag/ helping you has instant access to hand sanitiser before touching baby’s items (optional but I think is essential). The NSW Hopsital baby bag you receive after your baby is born, there will be a small gentle hand sanitiser which is great for using before you breast feed and after changing baby’s nappy.

  • Colostrum syringes that your midwife may have previously given you if you haven’t expressed any colostrum before giving birth, expressing colostrum is essential for babies first feed before your milk comes in. It’s quite easy to express and collect it in the hospital.
